All Birthlight classes are suitable for children from birth onwards. Classes are small with only two parent/child pairs in the pool at any time. We welcome mums, dads, grandparents or any adult guardian to accompany children for their classes. The pool temperature is kept at a comfortable 31-32°C and the ambient temperature is set so that children can stay comfortably warm throughout their lesson. All lessons are ½ hour in length.

The Birthlight Trust is a non-profit organisation dedicated to enhancing the health and wellbeing of women and their families from conception through to a child’s third year. We use simple body based practices inspired from yoga and traditional modes of parenting. Following birth, babies benefit greatly from touch and movement best suited to their developmental needs. There is abundant evidence that early interaction between parents and babies is crucial to healthy growth and creates the best foundation for learning and self-confidence in childhood.

From the moment babies are introduced to the water, Birthlight gives importance to their multi-sensory experience linked with emotions which reinforce pleasurable and positive sensations.

Toddler swimming supports loving and playful contact between parents and children in water. For toddlers who are already or nearly swimming, Birthlight classes provide a timely introduction to strokes, diving and correct surfacing to breathe. For children who are being introduced to the water for the first time, the Birthlight approach provides a secure transition to independent floating and swimming with or without buoyancy aids.

At 3 ½ to 4 years, once children have gained a good level of water confidence we encourage parents/guardians to leave the water to allow their child to work with the swimming teacher. We invite parents/guardians to stay poolside to offer support and encouragement to their young swimmers.

Classes are either 1-to-1 or 1-to-2.

We can offer lessons for children with recognised conditions and additional needs. Our quiet location, warm water, small pool size and adaptive lighting create an ideal environment for children to learn basic swimming skills and how to stay safe near water. Lessons are tailored to your child’s specific needs.

Classes offer moves and exercises specially designed for your child, supporting physical development and cognitive progress. Most importantly this is an opportunity to have fun with your child and enjoy the warm water environment.

Please be aware that due to the layout and situation of the pool we are unable to accommodate wheelchairs, and entry to the pool is via a short set of steps.

We have limited availability for adult lessons.

Whether you are new to swimming or wish to improve stamina and technique our gentle 1-to-1 classes will help to maximise your learning.

Classes will help you to understand how the human swimmer reacts in water and how to find balance and ease when swimming.

With improved technique your swimming will become more comfortable leading to greater speed and efficiency.
