Who are we?
Jill and Caroline are a mother and daughter team who both have a life long love of swimming. They strongly believe that swimming is one of the best ways to keep fit and active with minimal risk of injury. With backgrounds in paediatric nursing and education they know the importance of teaching children the important life skill of swimming. They specialise in helping children to learn in accordance with their developmental stage and adults to find comfort and ease in the water.
Jill is the owner and founder of SWIMMATTERS. Following a career in Nursing and Health Visiting, she was keen to improve her own swimming skills after struggling with injuries sustained during sporting and professional activities. She went on to train in the ‘Total Immersion’ method of swimming and on moving to Devon in 2014, she and her husband looked for a suitable property where they could build their own pool in which to offer lessons.
During this time Jill also trained as a Birthlight teacher so that she could work with babies and toddlers and also undertook additional training to work with children who have additional needs.
Caroline developed an early love of swimming and represented her county as a junior. With this experience under her belt, she trained and worked as a Water Safety Instructor for Camp America. She taught basic survival skills as well as stroke technique and water games. She has always had an affinity with young children and following her degree in education, has followed a career working in social care helping children with additional needs. She is now the mother of two girls who of course love the water! Caroline is also a qualified ‘Birthlight’ and STA level 2 swim teacher.
The ‘Old Barn’ is a purpose built pool facility incorporating an ‘Endless’ fast track machine. This allows participants to swim against a steady current, where the pace can be set to a level that is comfortable. It is the ideal learning environment with a fully integrated camera system, with playback and recording facilities, allowing for instant stroke analysis.
The pool is a consistent 1.2 mtrs in depth, with built-in steps at one end to allow children to balance.
The cleaning system for the pool is by UV light. This ensures that the water is constantly being cleaned as it passes through the filtration system. It also means that only small doses of chlorine are required to provide the perfect swimming environment. This is both kinder to hair, skin and bodies generally and no nasty chlorine smell.
The barn and the pool have integrated coloured lighting that can be set to either energise or relax, so adding to your swim experience. The complex has separate toilet, shower and changing facilities and all wet areas are covered with anti-slip flooring for your safety.
Please feel free to make a no obligation visit to see the facilities for yourself by calling or E-mailing to make an appointment.
